14 ways to save money while cooking

Sugar, spice and everything nice plus an extra ingredient: chemical X. No, that is not a way to save money while cooking; it’s just the way you create the Powerpuff Girls. Your kitchen is one of the first places where you could start saving money easily. Mainly, because eating at home instead of at a restaurant saves you a considerable amount of money. Here are some tips on how to save money while cooking:

  1. Cook frugally: use what you have and don’t let anything go to waste. Use the leftovers to make sandwiches, salads, tapas, etc.
  2. Plan your meals ahead: you know what your menu you’ll be and you can buy your groceries all at a time.
  3. Replace your soda with tap water. This way you stop drinking unhealthy sodas, and you also save money.
  4. Adjust the portions. So much food gets thrown away because people cannot approximate how much they can eat.
  5. Freeze your leftover food. Next week, when you don’t have time to cook, or don’t feel like cooking you can just defrost it.
  6. Change your protein provider: instead of meat try eggs, beans, etc.
  7. Buy packages of meat, portion and freeze them, so that you could use them for various meals. Precut meat is expensive and it only lasts for one meal.
  8. Frozen fruit is cheaper. You may try once in a while the fresh fruit, but if you want to save money, you’ll follow our advice.
  9. If you shop later, you could find all kind of perishable food on discount. Don’t worry, it’s not ruined, they just sell it for a smaller price in order not to throw it away.
  10. Be creative and create your own dressings and seasonings.
  11. Use rice and pasta with everything. Seriously, they go with everything.
  12. Take your leftovers to work. If you cooked too much, don’t throw it away. Make a casserole and eat it the next day at work.
  13. Don’t throw away the bread. Instead, make croutons that you can eat with soups and salads.
  14. Use a slow cooker. They work wonders.
